This shutter is 2.5 inches diameter at the cross pin. Also known as a water flapper, the shutter is open for exhaust to exit the engine and closes when the engine is not running to keep water from flowing back to the engine causing corrosion or serious damage to the engine. Installed downstream of the flexible union between the elbow and Y-pipe. APPLICATION: Fit Mercruiser stern drive from 1982 to 1996 engines, there are some 1996 and 1997 models that apply. Used with 4" Y-pipes Exhaust Elbow with round holes. If you have two rectangular holes for the grommets you need the 807166A1 water shutters. If your Y-pipe changes size a few inches below the shutter you have a one piece manifold V6 Y-pipe and need shutter 807166A2. If you have ever overheated these tend to get damaged. Sometimes you will find pieces of them in the exhaust when you remove the drive for servicing. They help keep water from entering the engine through the exhaust.
